This week in our art lesson we learnt about the artist Henri Matisse. He was the inventor of paper cut-outs, or collage, as an art form. Matisse made a famous collage entitled 'The Snail'. Deer Class emulated his style of art by creating their own snail collages.
In Forest School they extended their learning by using natural objects to make a snail collage. By the end of the week we had an escargatoire of snails, including some playdough and acorn sculptures!
The children used their imaginations to plan a continuation of the story 'The Snail and the Whale'. In their narratives, Deer Class took all the snails on an adventure with the whale. They had to invent a problem which was resolved and attempt to include a question mark and exclamation mark.
